HEALTH : ECOWAS INAUGURATES INAUGURAL MEETING OF REGIONAL CENTRE FOR DISEASE CONTROL. (RCDC)

HE NEED FOR A CONCERTED EFFORT TO FIGHT THE SCOURGE OF DISEASES IN THE SUB REGION HAS NECESSITATED THE DECISION BY ECOWAS IN ESTABLISHING THE REGIONAL CENTRE FOR DISEASE CONTROL
TO ACT AS A QUICK RESPONSE BODY TO HELP CHECK THE OUTBREAK OF NEW THREAT OF DISEASES EPIDEMICS SUCH AS LASSA FEVER, YELLOW FEVER AND ZIKA VIRUS WITHIN THE REGION.
THE INAUGURAL MEETING OF THE GOVERNING BOARD OF THE ECOWAS REGIONAL SURVEILLANCE AND DISEASES CONTROL CENTRE KICKED OFF IN ABUJA.
IT IS AN INSTITUTION CONCEIVED BY ECOWAS HEAD OF STATE AND GOVERNMENTS TO PROTECT ITS CITIZENS AND KEEP THEM SAFE FROM THE SCOURGE OF DISEASES THAT RAVAGED THE SUB REGION IN THE RECENT PAST
THE OUT BREAK OF THE EBOLA EPIDEMIC AND ITS DIVERSTATING EFFECT ON THE REGION WHICH ACCORDING TO THEM EXPOSED THE WEAKNESSES OF THE REGIONS HEALTH SYSTEMS AND LACK OF READINESS TO RESPOND TO EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE.
DIRECTOR GENERAL ACKNOWLEDGE THE COMMITMENT TO EFFECTIVELY IMPLEMENT THE REGULATIONS ESTABLISHING THE ECOWAS- RCSDC, WHICH HAS BEEN ENDORSED BY THE 48TH SUMMIT OF THE HEAD OF STATES AND GOVERNMENT HELD IN ABUJA IN DECEMBER, 2015.
THE IMPORTANCE OF SOUND HEALTH AS A PANACEA FOR A WEALTHY NATION CANNOT BE IN DOUBT AND THE DECISION TO CITE RCDC HEADQUARTERS IN NIGERIA IN APPRECIATION OF ITS EFFORT IN COMBATING THE EBOLA OUTBREAK IN THE COUNTRY IS APPRECIATED BY ATTENDEES.
MEANWHILE,ABDULSALAMI NASIDI HAS BEEN APPOINTED PIONEER ACTING EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ECOWAS RCDC FOR THE NEXT 12 MONTHS.
NIGERIA EFFECTIVELY TAMED THE EBOLA VIRUS EPIDEMIC IN THE COUNTRY HAS SUCH IT BECAME IMPORTANT FOR IT TO SHARE ITS EXPERIENCE WITH ITS FELLOW AS A WAY OF PREVENTING FUTURE DISASTER IN THE REGION.
