Genetically Modified Organism: Educating Nigerians of the Health Hazards.
The House of Representatives has urged it's committees on health care services, and agricultural production and services to invite the Minister of agriculture to explain the issuance of permit to Monsanto Agriculture Nigeria.
Lawmakers also called for the need of the appearance of the DG,NAFDAC to present to them the list of food supplements and genetically modified organisms that have been granted NAFDAC registration number.
There is a growing concern on indiscriminate importation and use of food supplements which are grossly abused among the elite and non-elite in the name of boosting nutritive and immune additives.
Lawmakers while debating the motion sponsored by Chukwukere Ikechukwu said the genetically modified organisms and food supplements are starting to intrude intonthe nation's diet which is not safe.
Other members disclosed that studies have shown that genetic modified foods may toxically affect several organs and systems with effects such as hepatic,pancreatic,renal or reproduction problems.
The house condemned the permit given to the GMO despite efforts of Nigerians to prevent the introduction.
