Ayokunle Emerges CAN President
President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention (NBC) and candidate of the Christian Council of Nigeria, CCN, Rev. Samson Olasupo Adeniyi Ayokunle, Tuesday emerged the new president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN)
Rev Ayokunle Ayokunle defeated Elder Joseph Otubu of the Motailatu Church Cherubim and Seraphim Movement (MCCSW) who represented the Organisation of African Instituted Churches, OAIC, with 57 votes to 28.
The outgoing president of the body, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, announced the result of the election at about 2:30 p.m. to a rousing applause of National Executive Council delegates from different parts of the country who had converged at the National Christian Centre in Central Business Centre of Abuja.
According to the CAN constitution, Prof. Joseph Otubu who emerged runners-up in the elections automatically becomes the Vice President of the Association for the next three years of the soon to be sworn in administration.

This was reached after the chairman House Committee on Communications Saheed Fijabi, frowned at the reduction of the fine without recourse to the National Assembly that is still investigating the matter.
Fijabi expressed worry that the reduction in the fine slammed on MTN by the Federal Government could send a wrong signal to other multinationals and companies, that, they could flout the country’s laws and have their fines reduced after negotiations.
The chairman of the Committee therefore demanded the Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr. Umar Danbata, to appear before it next Monday to explain what were the legal basis for the reduction of the fine to thirty percent.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Communication, Sunday Echono, reaffirmed that the Federal Government and MTN had reached a settlement, stressing that due process was followed at reaching the amount.

The NCC had on October 20 2015 imposed a 1.4 trillion naira fine
on MTN for allegedly undermining efforts by government to tackle security challenges by refusing to deactivate two hundred thousand unregistered mobile phone lines on its network.
